Delivering the keynote address as the Special Guest of Honor at the 3rd Annual Transformative Dialogue on Small-scale Mining held at the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani, on the theme: “Charting our courtesy mining vision and the future of illegal mining,” Mr. John Dramani Mahama, former President and presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, said it is his vision to reform Ghana’s mining sector, when he comes back as president of Ghana, in 2025.

Mr. Mahama argued that the illegal mining 'fight' approach by the NPP government was "unsustainable."

According to the NDC presidential candidate, “We must work together to develop and implement policies that prioritize sustainable mining practices and hold those who engage in illegal mining accountable;” and that, “this will require stricter enforcement of mining laws, increased investment in responsible mining technologies, and efforts to educate and empower small-scale miners to operate sustainably.”

“My government will structurally reform the entire mining sector through a comprehensive re-categorization into Small-Scale (SSM), Medium-Scale (MSM), and Large-Scale (LSM), each with specifically tailored operational, environmental, and safety requirements,” and “We will take deliberate and conscious policy steps to ensure that Ghanaians wholly operate Medium-Scale Mining (MSM) operations, without foreign frontrunners,” he added.

He also stated that, “as leader of the NDC and incoming President of the Republic, he is deeply committed to working with all stakeholders to chart a new vision for Ghana’s mining industry that will ensure Ghana's natural resources are managed to benefit the people; not just a few.”

The NDC presidential candidate believes his reformation of the mining sector of Ghana, through re-categorization, and ensuring of ownership of MSM solely by Ghanaians will make the sector easier and effective.

Mr. Mahama’s policy promise comes amidst concerns by most Ghanaians about the perceive domination of Ghana’s mining industry by foreigners.
